Fresnel lenses are a type of compact lens originally designed for lighthouses, allowing the construction of lenses with large apertures and short focal lengths without the mass and volume required by conventional designs. It can be made much thinner, sometimes as a flat sheet, capturing more oblique light to be visible over greater distances.
Today, Fresnels are widely used in traffic lights for strong beam alerting. They are also popular in theater and film productions. Lenses developed for these fields are flexible, allowing technicians to adjust light from a focused beam to a flooded position, creating hard-edged, clean shadows for precise lighting control.
